Margie Haak, a senior instructor in Oregon State University’s Department of Chemistry, has received the 2026 Outstanding Educator – Higher Education Award from the Oregon Academy of Science, recognizing more than three decades of dedication to teaching, mentorship and science outreach.
The Oregon Academy of Science Outstanding Educator Award honors faculty whose teaching and outreach have made lasting contributions to science education in Oregon.
Since joining Oregon State in 1993, Haak has helped thousands of students navigate their first experiences with college-level science. Known for her enthusiasm for teaching and commitment to student success, she has introduced innovative approaches to instruction, including active-learning strategies and digital tools that help students engage more deeply with course material.
“Margie has spent decades strengthening how we teach and support students in their first year of chemistry,” said Wei Kong, head of the Department of Chemistry. “Her work reflects a profound commitment to student success and to expanding access to science education across Oregon.”
Haak serves as head advisor for the Department of Chemistry and has mentored many students who have gone on to careers in science education, including as middle and high school teachers, and across the chemical sciences. Over two decades, she has directed The Mole Hole, Oregon State’s chemistry tutoring center, which has grown into a collaborative learning hub in the Valley Library that helps students build confidence and succeed in general, organic and physical chemistry.
Her commitment to science education extends beyond the university. Since 2001, Haak and chemical engineering professor Skip Rochefort have co-led the Family Science & Engineering Nights outreach program, bringing hands-on science activities to elementary schools across Oregon and engaging K–6 students and their families in interactive science experiences.
