Padmaja Akkaraju

Academic Advisor/Coordinator
Department of Physics

I bring a multidisciplinary background in physics and student services. My academic foundation in computational Thermophysics has evolved into a career dedicated to advancing equity and expanding student access, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). My work centers on fostering inclusive environments that promote student success and remove barriers to opportunity.

Research Areas

  • Thermophysical properties of solids
  • Student access, success, and empowerment
  • Equity-centered practices and organizational development

Teaching & Student Support

I have taught courses in physics, applied ethics, and ethnic studies, engaging learners from middle school through graduate programs.

My work in higher education has centered on advancing student success and career readiness through:

  • Workshops that help students overcome test anxiety, math anxiety, strengthen STEM study skills, address stereotype threat and impostor syndrome, and build resilience across diverse social and cultural contexts.
  • Career mentoring programs for undergraduate and graduate students, including peer networks, research opportunities, internship pathways, and career showcases.

Professional Preparation

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship in Thermoelastic Effect in Solids, University of Bristol, UK
  • Ph.D. in Computational Thermophysical Properties, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India
  • M.Ed. in College Student Services Administration, Oregon State University
